I have bought 3 trucks and different periods of time. So I know a thing or two about how to prepare for becoming an owner operator, the options to choose from and some things to consider before taking the leap. And there are options such as Lease Driver, Independent Contractor and Owner Operator. Which are you planning for?
I'll give you things to consider.
Well, it depends on your priority. Well you keep it and run with it or trade it in every 4 or 6 years for a newer model. Freightliners lose the most value but are workhorses.
Peterbilt and KW might hold their value the strongest if you're going to trade it in.
But do you want to profile in a truck stop or pocket the most money you can.
Do you want to get an authority or lease on.
Most people use the DAT loadboard. That's what I use. However, you might not even be the one finding the loads. It depends on how you're set up.
However, if you do use the DAT, I can show you how to get better rates. Unfortunately, guys come out here with no idea and take loads to cheap.
That's not good for any of us.
It many cases yes, if you're good with details and keeping up with paperwork and dates and payments. Basically if you're business minded. And if you plan on driving for a few years at least.
But if you're not sure yet, maybe hold off until you are. Because there lots to consider.
You'll be in the company of other people who have taken the class. But in addition to that I'll be doing monthly zoom call. Just to check on all of my students. Coming soon.
